  1. In 2002, Sims Limited expanded into curbside recycling in the United States with the creation of Sims Municipal Recycling (SMR). Since that time, the operation has grown to become the cornerstone of New York City’s recycling system.
  2. Brooklyn, NY The Sunset Park Material Recovery Facility is a processing center for New York City’s curbside metal, glass, and plastic recyclables undertaken by Sims Municipal Recycling and the City of New York. Located on an 11-acre waterfront pier in Sunset Park, the design’s programmatic use as a recycling center inspired reuse throughout.

Sunset Park Materials Recycling Facility Opened in December 2013. SMR managed construction of a new 11-acre recycling center on the Brooklyn waterfront from 2010 to 2013. SMR worked with geotechnical engineers to develop structural fill blends using “mole rock” from NYC tunneling projects mixed with recycled glass aggregate (RGA). This online guided tour of the facility will include videos, photos and graphics revealing how recycling works in NYC and how Sims Municipal Recycling sorts 1,000 tons of residential recycling each day, preparing the recyclables for sale and manufacture into new products. The session will also include an opportunity for Q&A. The Sunset Park MRF serves as the principal processing facility for all of New York City’s curbside residential metal, glass, and plastic recyclables as part of a long-term contract between Sims Municipal Recycling and the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY).

The Growing Problem of E-Waste

As consumers continue to “digitize” their lives, they are purchasing and discarding larger volumes of electronics. This results in a growing waste stream of broken, obsolete and unwanted electronic equipment, more commonly referred to as WEEE or e-waste. Discarded e-waste can be challenging to recycle because electronic products are complex devices manufactured from varying proportions of glass, metals and plastics.

SLS has been at the forefront of transforming the electronics recycling industry into a growing success story. We have led the industry in building a recycling infrastructure to support a sustainable ecosystem of product use, planned end-of-life disposal, and a systematic recycling process that extracts maximum value from discarded equipment, while creating green jobs.
