CEA-708 captions, which were introduced for use with digital television, follow much more advanced standards than 608 captions. These captions provide user control options for appearance, allowing the viewer to select from 8 font options, 3 text sizes, 64 text colors, and 64 background colors. The suffix '+subcc' can be appended to the output label to create an extra stream with the closed captions packets attached to that output (experimental; only for EIA-608 / CEA-708 for now). The subcc streams are created after all the normal streams, in the order of the corresponding stream. Traditionally, TV broadcasters have relied on specialized hardware to verify closed caption data (CEA-608 and CEA-708) from baseband SDI video sources. This includes HD and SD tape decks, server play-out, and non-linear editing systems with caption compatible hardware. The signal in SDI may contain line 21 for SD and line 9 data for HD video. Currently FFmpeg interprets both 'mediatypemstvcaption' and 'mediasubtypedtvccdata' as AVCODECIDDVBTELETEXT (see extract from wtvdec.c below). That now looks to be wrong. Mediasubtypedtvccdata is a variant of CEA-708.

Standard for closed captioning for ATSC digital television streams in the United States and Canada.Wikipedia

  • EIA-608

EIA-608, also known as 'line 21 captions' and 'CEA-608', used to be the standard for closed captioning for NTSC TV broadcasts in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Means for including a VCR control service with an electronic program guide for NTSC transmissions that operates on the even line 21 field, similar to the TeleText based VPS that operates on line 16 which is used in PAL countries.Wikipedia

  • ATSC standards

Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) standards are a set of standards for digital television transmission over terrestrial, cable, and satellite networks. Largely a replacement for the analog NTSC standard, and like that standard, used mostly in the United States, Mexico and Canada.Wikipedia

  • Advanced Television Systems Committee

Group, established in 1982, that developed the eponymous ATSC standards for digital television in the United States. These standards have also been adopted by Canada, Mexico, South Korea and recently Honduras, and are being considered by other countries.Wikipedia

  • List of ATSC standards

Below are the published ATSC standards for ATSC digital television service, issued by the Advanced Television Systems Committee. Amended to support Enhanced ATSC ; this transmission mode is backwardly compatible with the original 8-Bit Vestigal Sideband modulation scheme, but provides much better error correction.Wikipedia

  • Closed captioning

Closed captioning (CC) and subtitling are both processes of displaying text on a television, video screen, or other visual display to provide additional or interpretive information. Both are typically used as a transcription of the audio portion of a program as it occurs (either verbatim or in edited form), sometimes including descriptions of non-speech elements.Wikipedia

  • ATSC 3.0

Major version of the ATSC standards for television broadcasting created by the Advanced Television Systems Committee . ATSC 3.0 comprises around 20 standards covering different aspects of the system and in total will have over 1,000 pages of documentation.Wikipedia

  • Digital television in Canada

Transmitted using the ATSC standard. Because Canada and the U.S. use the same standard and frequencies for channels, people near the Canada–United States border can watch digital television programming from television stations in either country where available.Wikipedia

  • 8VSB

Modulation method used for broadcast in the ATSC digital television standard. Used primarily in North America; in contrast, the DVB-T standard uses COFDM.Wikipedia

  • NTSC

Analog television color system that was introduced in North America in 1954 and stayed in use until digital conversion. One of three major analog color television standards, the others being PAL and SECAM.Wikipedia

  • E-VSB

Optional enhancement to the original ATSC Standards that use the 8VSB modulation system used for transmission of digital television. Intended for improving reception where signals are weaker, including fringe reception areas, and on portable devices such as handheld televisions or mobile phones.Wikipedia

  • ATSC tuner

ATSC receiver or HDTV tuner, is a type of television tuner that allows reception of digital television (DTV) television channels that use ATSC standards, as transmitted by television stations in North America, parts of Central America, and South Korea. Such tuners are usually integrated into a television set, VCR, digital video recorder (DVR), or set-top box which provides audio/video output connectors of various types.Wikipedia

  • Digital Video Broadcasting

Set of international open standards for digital television. International industry consortium, and are published by a Joint Technical Committee of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and European Broadcasting Union (EBU).Wikipedia

  • Digital television adapter

Television tuner that receives a digital television (DTV) transmission, and converts the digital signal into an analog signal that can be received and displayed on an analog television set. The input digital signal may be over-the-air terrestrial television signals received by a television antenna, or signals from a digital cable system.Wikipedia

  • Broadcast television systems

Terrestrial television systems (or Broadcast television systems in the US and Canada) are the encoding or formatting standards for the transmission and reception of terrestrial television signals. There were three main analog television systems in use around the world until the late 2010s (expected): NTSC, PAL, and SECAM.Wikipedia

  • High-definition television

Television system providing an image resolution that is of substantially higher resolution than that of standard-definition television (SDTV). This can be either analog or digital television.Wikipedia

  • DVB-T

Abbreviation for 'Digital Video Broadcasting — Terrestrial'; it is the DVB European-based consortium standard for the broadcast transmission of digital terrestrial television that was first published in 1997 and first broadcast in the UK in 1998. MPEG transport stream, using coded orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing modulation.Wikipedia

  • Digital television transition in the United States

The switchover from analog to exclusively digital broadcasting of terrestrial television television programming. Introduced.'Wikipedia

  • Digital subchannel

In broadcasting, digital subchannels are a method of transmitting more than one independent program stream simultaneously from the same digital radio or television station on the same radio frequency channel. Done by using data compression techniques to reduce the size of each individual program stream, and multiplexing to combine them into a single signal.Wikipedia

  • DVB-C

DVB European consortium standard for the broadcast transmission of digital television over cable. MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 family digital audio/digital video stream, using a QAM modulation with channel coding.Wikipedia

  • FFmpeg

Free and open-source project consisting of a vast software suite of libraries and programs for handling video, audio, and other multimedia files and streams. FFmpeg program itself, designed for command-line-based processing of video and audio files, and widely used for format transcoding, basic editing , video scaling, video post-production effects, and standards compliance (SMPTE, ITU).Wikipedia
